Built in 1883 for the Continental Fire Company, this Italianate brick landmark has anchored the corner of Huron and Montezuma for well over a century.
The three-story hall did more than answer alarms. From 1886 to 1889, the Michigan Mining School, known today as Michigan Technological University, held its very first classes on the second floor and in the basement below the engine bays.
A bell cast in 1884 once hung in the cupola, where fire hoses were raised to dry. The department answered Houghton's calls here until 1974, and the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, as part of the Shelden Avenue Historic District, in 1987.
In 2012 the old firehouse was reborn as The Continental Fire Co. Today it is home to Bonfire, a steakhouse, lounge, live-music stage, and banquet hall gathered under one historic roof, where cuts are seared over open flame and Copper Country gathers long after the last plate is cleared.
